CICERO, N.Y. (BP) – Terry Robertson, executive director/treasurer of the Baptist Convention of New York (BCNY), announced Tuesday (June 4) he will retire next spring after nearly 20 years in the role. Robertson made the announcement to the BCNY’s executive board at their regularly scheduled meeting.
“One week after our 55th Annual Meeting, I will turn 70. It is time for a change,” Robertson said in a news release. The BCNY’s annual meeting is in September. “I have served 40-plus years of ministry within the BCNY territory, pastoring three BCNY churches, serving as director of missions for one association and soon to be 20 years as the BCNY EDT. The Lord has blessed me with such a time as this, but it is time for someone else to lead the work of this great mission field territory.”
Robertson was selected to lead the 55-year-old convention in October 2004 and has overseen “monumental change” in preparation for future ministry, the release said.
Robertson and his wife Elizabeth moved to New York as church planters in 1980. He went on to serve in many roles in Baptist life – as an associational missionary, on the state convention’s executive board, on the Southern Baptist Convention’s (SBC) Committee on Nominations and on the SBC Executive Committee.
“God has done amazing work during the 40-plus years that He has allowed us to live and serve here,” Robertson said. “It has been our privilege to work alongside so many dedicated Christ followers throughout BCNY and the SBC. I am grateful for their encouragement, friendship, prayers and support.”
A transition plan was also introduced to BCNY board members at the meeting. A transition team of nine members (most of whom have not yet been named) is tasked with finding a replacement for Robertson, whose service will conclude April 1, 2025.
